The department of Gastroenterology had a humble beginning in the
year 1976 with Dr. K Vinayachandran Nair as its founder. Professor G.K.Warrier,
the then Director and Professor of Medicine, gave a rigid sigmoidoscope to Dr.
K. Vinayachandran Nair with which he set up the nidus of the Gastroenterology
Unit. It was housed in a side room near Ward No. 5.He was working as Asst. Professor
in Medicine and later became Asst Professor of
Gastroenterology. In 1978, the unit was allotted space at the present location
which was the workshop area of the hospital. That is why the present ward
does not have the structure of other wards. A 12 bedded male ward and a 8 bedded
female ward, a laboratory and an endoscopy room was all that the
department had until 1985.
In the year 1981 Endoscopy was started with a full fledged
Endoscopy units with three duodenscopes, two gastroscopes, one esophagoscope,
one colonoscope, one laparoscope, one rigid sigmoiodoscope and two lecturescopes.
Since then the endoscopy records are kept meticulously and it is being used for
various long term studies. Additional space was obtained in the year 1985 which
housed the ultrasound room, Units chief's room and the two laboratories in
addition to the outpatient area. In the year 1986 the Ultrasound scan was commissioned
in the department which has paved way for many research work in the unit. The
unit was still without enough space and with the help of the then principal Dr.
Aysha Guharaj, the vacant area in front of the department was converted into
three storied complex which housed the therapeutic endoscopy unit, the space for
ICU, the seminar room, library and the staff rooms. This area was commissioned in
the year 1990 and it paved way for starting the DM course in Gastroenterology in
the year 1991.
Dr. KV Nair took long leave in the year 1992 and Dr. Meenu
Hariharan became the head of department. She got transferred to Medical College
Trivandrum in 1993 and Dr. Varghese Thomas became the Head of Department in
1993.Dr. KV Nair retruned in the year 1995 and took voluntary retirement in
1996. Dr. Shobana Devi R joined as Professor in 199. A new Video Endoscopy
system consisting of a gastroscope, duodenoscope and a colonoscope was commissioned
in the years1997-98. The Hepatology Unit was sanctioned in the year 2002.A state
of the art image capturing system was commissioned in March 2003. In August 2003,Dr. Shobana Devi got transferred to Trivandrum and Dr. Varghese Thomas took over
as Head of Department.
Lot of Developmental activities happened in the year 2004. The
state of the art Hepatology ICU was inaugurated in March 2004.A new ultrasound
scanner was commissioned in the department. An internal intercom connecting
different areas of the department was established with the help of sponsors.
Further space was obtained opposite OP No. 67 for the Advanced liver laboratory
and the store area. A new C arm image intensifier was set up in the therapeutic
endoscopy theatre. A computer net work was established in January 2005 linking
all endoscopy units, seminar hall, ICU, HOD's room. A room for Data entry was
also set up with computer links to all other areas in the department. The new Endoscopy theatre was commissioned in early 2005 Patient
friendly developments like improvement of patient waiting area was the notable
development of the year.
It may look as if the developments came like a predetermined plan.
There were innumerable obstacles from inside and outside against the development of
the Gastroenterology unit since its inception. However none of the
obstacles could not stand in the way of the strong commitment of its
founding father and his successors.
